The edition With Love and Kisses features a motif by Anne Waak. The cultural journalist and author lives in Berlin and writes non-fiction books exploring contemporary phenomena, offering relatable and undogmatic arguments for the future. In addition to her writing, she has also published two photography books in recent years, broadly addressing the theme of childhood.
What fascinates FROM about Waak is her boundless curiosity about our world. With a sensitive eye, she observes life and uncovers treasures that others might overlook. The precise, clean and elegant language of her texts also characterizes her photography.
The author maintains a large photographic archive, including a series of images from 2009, taken during her extended stay in Israel-Palestine. The chosen piece is a photograph of the wall in Bethlehem.
This selection is the result of many conversations about questions like: What do we want to say? What can we say? And how will we say it? To give the edition context and a sense of purpose, Anne Waak wrote the following:
"At the beginning of 2009, I traveled to the West Bank. It was there, in Bethlehem, beneath the shadow of the wall separating Israel and the occupied territories, that I captured this image. The pasted message 'Nothing lasts forever' is open to countless interpretations. It could serve as a message of perseverance for those enduring the occupation, a grim statement of defiance, a threat aimed in either direction, or perhaps even a gesture of reconciliation. But when I think of this image now, against the backdrop of the ongoing Middle East conflict and its latest, increasingly devastating escalations, one thought stays with me: even something that doesn’t last forever can persist for an unbearably long time."
Neither of us can remember a time when this conflict didn’t shape the world around us. The violence, ever-expanding in its reach, leaves us both aghast and frustrated.
That’s why a significant portion of the proceeds from this edition will be donated to Standing Together, a progressive grassroots movement that brings Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel together in the pursuit of peace, equality, and social justice. As the largest Jewish-Arab organization, Standing Together tirelessly advocates for an alternative to the status quo. Through peaceful demonstrations and community-driven events, they work towards political transformation and genuine coexistence. (👁️ Learn more about Standing Together.)
